IG Index plc is part of IG Group, which has several operating companies in the UK, offering a variety of speculative products to a retail and professional client base. Founded by Stuart Wheeler in 1974, one of Britain’s best-known gamblers and Conservative Party donors, IG Index was the first spread company into the market. It offers prices in a huge range of indices, currencies, commodities and options, as well as thousands of individual shares.
In May 2005, IG Group Holdings plc was floated on the main list of the London Stock Exchange. Since then it has been promoted to become a member of the FTSE 250 and currently has a market capitalisation of around £1 billion.
IG Markets is a market-maker in financial derivatives, principally Contracts for Difference (CFDs) on shares and indices, as well as a leading dealer in margined Foreign Exchange. Clients include brokers, fund managers and trading companies as well as private investors.
Over the last three years the group has continued to expand its product range and scope of operations through the introduction of binary betting (binarybet.com), the latest financial betting phenomenon. This offers a wide range of fast-moving bets on financial markets events every day.
IG Group companies have tens of thousands of clients worldwide making over 200,000 transactions a month, 85% of them online. In the year to May 2006, the Group achieved a turnover of £89.4 million, and generated record profits of £52.6 million. Head office is in central London with other offices in Melbourne, Singapore and Dusseldorf.
